Pathologist to Review
At Phoenix Lab, our pathologists routinely review many more blood smears and urine sediment preparations than is customary at larger laboratories. In part, this reflects the expanded Pathologist to Review (PTR) criteria that Phoenix Lab technicians use when reviewing blood smears or urine sediments, but a technician may also refer a urinalysis, CBC and/or chemistry panel for pathologist review when findings seem unusual. For example, moderate epithelial cells seen on a urinalysis would be given an automatic PTR. A PTR would also be requested if the technician saw only a few epithelial cells but they appeared atypical. The pathologist examines both a Wright’s stained urine sediment slide and cytospin preparation to assess morphology of the epithelial cells. A clinic can request a PTR on a CBC or urinalysis by writing this on the test request form when submitting the sample, or by contacting Client Services any time after the sample is submitted. It is helpful for the review to provide a few words on clinical impression or the reason for the PTR request.
PTRs are provided at no additional charge to the original test.
